Professional Air Leakage Testing in Vancouver

Air leakage through the building envelope is a major source of energy loss and can contribute to moisture problems, drafts, and poor indoor air quality. Our air leakage testing services identify where air is entering and escaping your building, enabling targeted improvements.

Using blower door testing and thermal imaging, we can quantify your building's air tightness and pinpoint specific leakage locations for effective sealing.

Signs of Air Leakage

  • Drafts near windows and doors
  • Cold spots on interior walls
  • High heating/cooling bills
  • Dust accumulation near outlets
  • Difficulty maintaining temperature

Testing Benefits

  • Quantify building airtightness
  • Identify specific leak locations
  • Verify air sealing effectiveness
  • Support energy efficiency upgrades
  • Meet building code requirements

Our Testing Methods

Blower Door Testing

A calibrated fan mounted in an exterior door creates controlled pressure differentials to measure total building air leakage.

Thermal Imaging

During pressurization, infrared cameras reveal air leakage paths as temperature anomalies on building surfaces.

Smoke Testing

Theatrical smoke released during pressurization visually reveals air movement through cracks and penetrations.

Understanding Test Results

Our test results are presented in standard metrics that allow comparison to building codes and industry benchmarks.

Metrics We Report

  • ACH50: Air changes per hour at 50 Pascals pressure
  • CFM50: Cubic feet per minute of air leakage at 50 Pa
  • ELA: Equivalent leakage area in square inches
  • NLA: Normalized leakage area per 100 sq ft of envelope

Typical Targets

  • Existing buildings: 5-7 ACH50
  • Energy efficient: 3-5 ACH50
  • High performance: 1-3 ACH50
  • Passive House: 0.6 ACH50 or less
